SOW OUTSIDE
in spring or late summer. Prepare a very fine seed bed for the dustlike seed. Do not cover but water in well with a fine rose.
GROW
in any garden soil.
SITE
in sun or partial shade.
MEDICINAL
Yarrow is the great wound herb said to have been used by Achilles to treat the wounds of his warriors. Also of value as a tea for treatment of severe colds and commencement fo fevers. Said to help prevent baldness. The fresh leaves chewed lessons the pain of toothache. Employed in Morway for cure of rheumatism.
CULTINARY
The leaves were once used in salads. Used as a substitute for Hops in Swede where it is called "Field Hope". It was supposed to make the beer more intoxicating.
FOLKLORE
Yarrow was a pretection against eveil for the Anglo-Saxons. It is also one of the herbs of St John (like St Johns Wort) and is hung in houses in Ireland on St Johns Eve to avert illness. Yarrow has many colourful local names. Old Mans Pepper because it was used as sniff. Known as Yarroway in the Eastern Counties. Also known as Devils plaything. Knights Milfoil, Soldiers Woundwort. Staunchweed and Bloodwort.
NATURALISING
Yarrow grows in most soils and in grass ladn. It is a most attractive plant that makes a decorative dried flower. A basic constituent of any meadow mixture being very deeooting and draught resisitant and most nutritiuos to stock.
