Decorative plant growing 30cm high but spread-ing. Lovely brown red flowers and ‘winged’ pods which are delicious eaten when small 2-4cm long. Keep picked for good production. Matures in approx. 50 days. s/c 40

WHERE TO SOW

Early sowings under cloches and from mid-April direct into open site in drills 1.5cm (3/4”) deep, spacing seed 5cm (2”) apart. Space rows 35cm (15”) apart or if using supports 60cm (24”) apart.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Protect seed and young seedlings from bird damage by covering with netting. Put up supports, if required, as soon as seedlings emerge.

HANDY TIPS

To cook, just top and tail the pods and steam or lightly boil. Pick regularly to ensure continuous cropping. Small winged pods for harvesting small when about 3 – 4cm (1” x 11/2”) long and cooking whole. Can be grown with or without support. Also known as Winged Pea.
